“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”
The above is likely one of the best known sentences in the American lexicon; it is the second sentence of the US Declaration of Independence. This sentence affirms both the philosophy of Meritocracy and Egalitarianism as the social basis of the nation. No person of logic seeks equality of outcome, or redistribution of wealth as is claimed by the Right of today. What is required is equality of opportunity so creativity, scholarship, and excellence is rewarded no matter where it is found. Would this require some redistribution of collected taxes to assure improvements to public infrastructure, such as in education systems? Yes, it would. Would this require us to ensure children are cared for, receiving health care, proper nutrition, and yes clothing and housing when necessary? Yes, in some cases it might. Would this require that we evaluate our current model of stripping our economy of jobs simply to squeeze that last red cent? Indeed, as a nation we need to begin to look at our economy as a living part of our nation, without it we will die.
Capitalists would have you believe Egalitarians hate excellence, hate creativity; in fact, it is just the opposite. Most who follow the purest form of a Merit based Egalitarian philosophy believe excellence should rise to the top based on personal effort and personal contributions. We believe that given equality of opportunity a far greater pool of resources will contribute to the success of the nation through their creative capacity, scientific research, public service, educational attainments, and business acumen. We believe today the pool is shrunk to an elite inbred group that are predatory in their nature and in their refusal to open the door of opportunity to others
